The northwoods, twenty minutes from Wausau

Up north is a feeling before it is a map, and everyone draws the line somewhere different. This is the northwoods proper, all pines, birch and wildflower meadows, without the five-hour drive that the far north costs you.

Nearby there is the Dells of the Eau Claire County Park for the river and the rock gorge, and Norrie Lake. On the land itself there are two ponds with a canoe and kayaks, walking trails, a wood-fired sauna and a butterfly house.

Where can I go camping up north in Wisconsin?

This campground is at 177852 County Hwy Z in Aniwa, in the northwoods of north-central Wisconsin, about twenty minutes from Wausau. Six woodland tent sites from $35 a night, two hand-built A-frame cabins from $55, and a canvas yurt from $40.

Is there running water or electricity?

There is no indoor plumbing anywhere on the property. Drinking water is an electric dispenser in the shared kitchen, hot and cold on demand. Washing up is at an outdoor sink on a hose, and there is a clean outhouse, a solar shower and an outdoor bathtub. Power exists in three places only: the shared kitchen, the corn crib and the yurt.

Do you have to bring your own firewood?

No. Firewood is free and included with every stay. Burn restrictions are set by the county rather than by us, so a fire ban is out of our hands.

Can you camp there in winter?

The cabins and tent sites are not seasonal, but the yurt is open May through September only. Ask before booking a cold-weather stay: none of the stays are heated and the water is outdoors.

How do you book, and when are you charged?

You send a request with your dates. A person reads it and writes back. Your card is held by Stripe and only charged at the moment we confirm, never before. Cancellation is free with a full refund up to 48 hours before check-in.
